Speed zone near Turkey Valley school set to be installed Jan. 16

MASON CITY, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT), in cooperation with the Turkey Valley Community School District, will soon be setting up a reduced speed zone on Iowa 24 in Jackson Junction. Signs with the text message “School Speed Limit 45 When Flashing” will be installed with amber flashing beacons along Iowa 24 in Jackson Junction, near the entrances to the Turkey Valley school facility. The speed limit in that area will be reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph when the beacons are flashing.

On school days, the beacons will start flashing 30 minutes before school starts and continue to flash for 15 minutes after school has started. The beacons will start flashing again 15 minutes before the end of the school day and keep flashing for 30 minutes after school ends. The beacons can also be programmed to flash for after-school events.

This proactive measure is being taken to maintain highway safety in the area of the Turkey Valley School. Weather permitting, the Iowa DOT is planning to install the signs and beacons Jan. 16, 2008.
