More Iowa roadways turn icy
AMES, Iowa - Jan. 3, 2008: 4:15 p.m. update - The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is warning travelers that freezing drizzle/rain is causing roadways to become covered with ice in parts of west, northwest, north central, central Iowa, and northeast Iowa. Travel is not being advised on Interstate 35 and U.S. 65 north from U.S. 18 to the Minnesota border. Ice is covering several interstate routes in the affected areas, including I-29, I-35, I-80, and I-680. The Iowa DOT’s roadway sensors from west to east (Sioux City, Missouri Valley, Carroll, Storm Lake, Mason City, Ames, Steamboat Rock, and Waterloo) are all reporting surface temperatures below freezing. Any moisture hitting roadways in these areas is likely to freeze, causing slick roads. The National Weather Services has issued a winter weather advisory for a large portion of central and northern Iowa until 9 p.m. this evening, and northeast and eastern Iowa through 6 a.m. Sunday. Areas of fog, light freezing rain or freezing drizzle, with possible snow or sleet is forecast for these periods. Tips for driving in icy conditions can be found at:
The Iowa DOT will be monitoring road conditions and issuing additional alerts, as warranted.
