Road work continues on U.S. 63 in Bremer and Chickasaw counties
NEW HAMPTON, Iowa – Nov. 25, 2009 – A final staging change for the U.S. 63 paving project will begin Wednesday, Dec. 2, for the permanent layout of the traffic lanes in Bremer and Chickasaw counties from 0.5 miles south of Iowa 188 north to 1.2 miles south of the Iowa 346/U.S. 18 interchange, weather and scheduling permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) New Hampton construction office.
Pending weather and scheduling, the following work will take place during this phase of the paving project beginning Dec. 2.
· Northbound traffic on U.S. 63 will begin using both of the new
northbound lanes.
· Southbound traffic will be moved to the existing lanes.
· The north connection of the bypassed portion of U.S. 63 will be
opened to traffic.
Prior to the lane changes, changeable message signs will be placed on each end of the work zone and at paved side roads to remind traffic of this future switch. The signs will remain in place a few days after the switch to remind motorists that all lanes are open.
Remaining work impacting traffic includes changing pavement markings in the northbound lanes. When this work is underway, lane closures will be in place. Traffic approaching from residencies and side roads should be alert for this final configuration, and use extra caution when entering or crossing this fully accessible section.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
