Nighttime work to remove dirt set to begin tonight on Fort Madison bypass
MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa – Dec. 1, 2009 – Contractors working to finish up the construction season on the U.S. 61 bypass of Fort Madison will be increasing their hours, hauling dirt in the evenings beginning tonight, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Mount Pleasant construction office.
The dirt hauling is expected to take place from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday nights, weather permitting, through the end of December. Increased noise and truck traffic can be expected from just east of 315th Avenue east across Lee County Road X-38 to just west of U.S. 61 along the bypass alignment.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
