Nighttime bridge washing on Mississippi River bridges in Bettendorf and Clinton scheduled

DAVENPORT, Iowa – March 9, 2010 – Scheduled bridge washing projects on the Mississippi River bridges in Bettendorf (Interstate 74) and Clinton (Iowa 136/Lyons-Fulton) will cause lanes to be restricted to one lane in both directions from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Davenport  construction office.

Both projects will require the open lane to have an 11½ -foot width lane restriction during the nighttime work. The roadways will be returned to normal traffic when workers are not present.

The Bettendorf (I-74) project is scheduled to start Monday, April 5, with a completion date of mid-May, weather permitting.

  • Motorists should expect delays at Exit 4 (U.S. 67), and Grant and State streets.
  • A lane closure on the Illinois bound bridge will require closure of the State Street on-ramp in Iowa.
  • A lane closure on the Iowa bound bridge will require closure of the River Drive on-ramp in Illinois.

The Clinton (Iowa 136) project is scheduled to start after the Bettendorf bridge washing project is completed. This project is expected to be completed by late May 2010, weather permitting.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations can more than double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
