AMES, Iowa – Dec. 11, 2010 – 9:45 p.m. update – The Iowa departments of Transportation and Public Safety are currently in the process of closing Interstate 80 in western Iowa and removing existing traffic from the roadway to adjacent communities.
Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-80 are being closed between exit 8, near Council Bluffs, and exit 121, Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines.
Equipment is being positioned at each end of the route to stop mainline traffic from entering the closed section. Motorists should NOT use any of the on-ramps to enter I-80 along this stretch as the road will not be maintained during the overnight hours. Blizzard conditions exist.
Interstate travelers should seek shelter and services in the Des Moines and Council Bluffs/Omaha metro areas.
The Iowa DOT will notify the public when the road is reopened. Information will also be made available at www.511ia.org and by calling 511.
