New, programmable school beacon signs light up soon on Iowa 122 near Mason City

October 09, 2012

MASON CITY, Iowa – Oct. 9, 2012 – The Iowa Department of Transportation will be installing two programmable, solar-powered, amber flashing beacons with “School Speed Limit 35 When Flashing” signs along Iowa 122 at the Mason City Community High School. The installation is planned for Wednesday, Oct. 10, or Thursday, Oct 11, weather permitting, according the Iowa DOT’s District 2 Office in Mason City.

Mason City High School staff will have control of the beacons, which will be programmed to flash each school day from 7:30 to 9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. These beacons can also be activated for after normal school hour events.

The new signs and beacons will be placed alongside the current 45 mph speed limit signs.
