Repairs planned to highway-railroad grade crossings across Iowa
AMES, Iowa – Nov. 14, 2012 – Funding to improve the surface at 12 highway-railroad grade crossings in 2014 was approved yesterday by the Iowa Transportation Commission. A list of the planned improvement locations may be found at http://www.iowadot.gov/iowarail/index.htm.
The Highway-Railroad Crossing Surface Repair Program supports the improvement of crossings to maintain safe and smooth highway-railroad crossings for Iowa's motorists. The program covers 60 percent of the repair cost, the railroad and highway jurisdiction (normally a city or county) each pay 20 percent. Funding for the program comes from the Iowa Road Use Tax Fund.
"The roadway jurisdiction initiates the application for surface repair funding," said Mary Jo Key, program manager in the Iowa DOT’s Office of Rail Transportation. "We accept applications at any time, and projects are primarily funded in the order in which they are received. The available money allows only a limited number of surface improvements each year, so there is a multiyear waiting period for the assistance."
Applications for the program are available at the Office of Rail Transportation's Web site at http://www.iowadot.gov/iowarail/index.htm.
