AMES, Iowa – May 22, 2013 – The Iowa Department of Transportation is joining a host of statewide organizations in support of the state’s fourth Iowa Trails Summit and Family Fun Day Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15, in Cedar Falls/Waterloo.
The summit, to be held Friday, June 14, at the University of Northern Iowa Schindler Education Center, brings together a group of trails and community development experts that will share ideas and innovations that can influence the future of trails, outdoor recreation and economic development in Iowa. Saturday, June 15, will be a free family fun day with outdoor recreation activities open to the public with no registration required.
This year’s theme is “Trails, Blue Zones, and Building a Healthier Iowa.” Speakers represent a diversity of users, including cyclists, snowmobilers, walkers, paddlers, mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers and four-wheelers.
The master of ceremonies, returning for the fourth year, Chuck Offenburger, hosts a group of some of Iowa’s most interesting experts, and the featured keynote speaker, world famous Charlie Wittmack, sharing his presentation: Committed to the Core – Stories from the World Triathlon.

This award-winning event (National Park Service’s Mid America Trails and Greenways, 2011) has been recognized for its unique approach to trails users working together to build healthier communities.
Friday, June 14
Time: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Location: University of Northern Iowa University’s Schindler Education Center, University Avenue and Campus Street, Cedar Falls
Fee: $35 registration includes refreshments, lunch and parking ($40 after June 7)
Time: 6 –7:30 p.m.
Location: Gateway Park, North Main and First Street, Cedar Falls
The dinner will be on the banks of the Cedar River in Cedar Falls.
Fee: $10 ($12 after June 7)
Saturday, June 15
Fun Day – Celebrating the Trails Summit with free family activities
Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Riverview Recreation Area, Hawthorne Avenue, Waterloo
Fee: All events are free.
A variety of outdoor recreation activities, including Kayak Demo Day sponsored by Scheels and Confluence Water Sports, four-wheeler demonstrations by the Trailblazers Off Road Club, snowmobile demonstration by the Iowa Snowmobile Association, three bicycle rides (10, 20 and 30 miles) sponsored by the Cedar Valley Cyclists, an Iowa Department of Natural Resources paddling safety presentation, and a nature trail experience presented by Hartman Reserve and the Iowa DNR AmeriCorps Trails crew, featuring the opportunity for participants to make their own custom walking stick.
This will be an exciting day for the public to enjoy trails recreation activities. The events are open to the public. Families and children are welcome.
