NEW HAMPTON, Iowa – Feb. 23, 2018 – A construction project on U.S. 63 between Franklin and Newell streets in Waterloo will require closing the roadway to traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, March 5, until late November 2019, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.
One of the first phases of the project will require demolishing the existing pedestrian bridge so pedestrian access around the project will be reduced. Additional work includes replacement of utilities and pavement; building a bridge to carry U.S. 63 traffic over the current CN's railroad structure; removal of the railroad structure; and replacing the pedestrian bridge with an underpass.
During this project, U.S. 63 traffic will be detoured around the work zone using Airline Highway, Airport Boulevard, and U.S. 218.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
