CHARITON, Iowa – March 29, 2018 – Road construction work on U.S. 34 between Lucas County roads S-50 and S-56 near Russell will require closing the road to traffic beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, April 2, until the second week of April, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Chariton construction office.

During this project, motorists will be directed around the work zone using one of the following signed detour routes. (See map.)

  • Motorists traveling west on U.S. 34 who wish to drive to Chariton from Albia will need to turn north on Iowa 5, west on Iowa 92, and then south on Iowa 14 to reconnect onto U.S. 34.
  • Motorists traveling east on U.S. 34 who wish to drive to Albia from Chariton will need to turn north on Iowa 14, east on Iowa 92, and then south on Iowa 5 to reconnect onto U.S. 34.
  • Local traffic along U.S. 34, between Iowa 14 and Iowa 5, will have access to U.S. 34 except for the closure on U.S. 34 between Lucas County roads S-50 and S-56.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
