NEW HAMPTON, Iowa – April 12, 2018 – Beginning Monday morning, April 16, north- and southbound traffic at the Iowa 58/Viking Road interchange project in Cedar Falls will be shifted to the outside lanes with the inside lanes being closed, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office. For the past several weeks the southbound outside lane has been closed and both northbound lanes have been open to traffic.
In late April, weather permitting, the northbound lanes of Iowa 58 between West Ridgeway Avenue and Greenhill Road will be closed and traffic will be switched so that northbound traffic will be sharing lanes with southbound traffic in a head-to-head pattern. The eastbound lanes of Viking Road between Enterprise Drive and Wal-Mart Drive will be closed and traffic will be switched so that eastbound traffic will be sharing lanes with westbound traffic in a head-to-head pattern.
The lane closures may result in congestion that will cause traffic backups and delays during peak times. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes to avoid the congestion.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
