FAIRFIELD, Iowa – August 6, 2018 – Railroad bridge repairs over Iowa 1 North/Iowa 92 West, between Green Meadows Drive and Parkside Estate Road, in the city of Washington, will require closing the roadway to traffic beginning 7 a.m. Monday, August 20, for approximately two weeks, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Fairfield office.

During railroad bridge repairs, motorists will be directed around the work zone using one of the following signed detour routes (see map).

  • Motorists wishing to travel on Iowa 1 North/Iowa 92 West will be detoured onto Iowa 92 East for approximately 1.6 miles (which involves driving east on Madison Street, north on 2nd Avenue, and east on Washington Street), and then turn north onto 12th Avenue (which changes to Washington County Road W-61) for approximately 2.7 miles, and then west onto Washington County Road G-36 (220th Street) for 2 miles to reach the junction with Iowa 1.
  • Motorists wishing to travel to the city of Washington on Iowa 1 South/Iowa 92 East, will be detoured east onto Washington County Road G-36 (220th Street) for approximately 2 miles, then south on Washington County Road W-61 (which changes to 12th Avenue) for approximately 2.7 miles, and then west onto Iowa 92 West (which involves driving on East Washington Street, 2nd Avenue, and West Madison Street) for approximately 1.6 miles to reach the junction with Iowa 1 South.
  • Local traffic traveling along Iowa 1/Iowa 92 will have access except for the lanes crossing under the railroad bridge between Green Meadows Drive and Parkside Estate Road.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
