Iowa Transportation Commission approves 2013 intercity bus projects

AMES, Iowa – Dec. 11, 2012 – Today, the Iowa Transportation Commission (Commission) approved more than $1.8 million in grants for five intercity transit providers under the calendar year 2013 Intercity Bus Program. The Commission approved the funds for 12 projects submitted by the following five entities.

  • City of Dubuque Public Transit (The Jule)
  • Jefferson Lines
  • City of Fort Dodge Public Transit (DART)
  • Burlington Trailways
  • City of Sioux City Public Transit

With the current trend in intercity bus transportation moving away from rural connectivity into more urban-to-urban service, these funds play a vital role in keeping rural Iowa connected to other areas within Iowa, the Midwest and nation. This funding comes from the Federal Transit Administration’s 5311(f) program intended to support intercity bus providers that serve communities with less than 20,000 residents.

Several applications were received this year that highlight the important role of this funding. Jefferson Lines received funds to continue operations at the Iowa Travel Information Center located at the Mason City airport. The center is a one-stop-shop where clients can get information and purchase intercity bus tickets, as well as receive information on Iowa’s 35 urban and rural public transit systems. Agents can be reached at 800-451-5333.

Burlington Trailways and Jefferson Lines both received funds to purchase a new 45-foot motor coach, which will be used to replace outdated vehicles.

Funding was also awarded to the city of Dubuque public transit system, The Jule, for construction of the intercity bus portion of the new intermodal facility located in the historic Millwork District of Dubuque; and Sioux City received funding to rehabilitate a portion of their intermodal facility.

A listing of the individual projects and funding amounts is available on the Iowa Department of Transportation’s website http://www.iowadot.gov/transit/.
