Update on Iowa road closures and conditions
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) is reporting that there are several isolated areas throughout the northern half of Iowa where roadways may be closed due to the white-out conditions and a rash of motor vehicle crashes.
Travel is not advised in the blizzard area, which spreads from the northwest near Storm Lake to Charles City in northeast Iowa; and north to the Minnesota border and south to U.S. 30.
Due to zero visibility, Iowa DOT maintenance crews have been pulled from the roadways at many locations in the affected area. According to the Iowa DOT’s weather sensors, winds are presently gusting from 35-55 mph in these areas. Roadways are generally partially covered by minor drifting.
Road crews will resume winter maintenance operations as soon as visibility improves.
