Traffic restrictions scheduled on Interstate 80 and U.S. 71 near Atlantic

CRESTON, Iowa – June 25, 2008 – The westbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Atlantic will be closed Monday morning, June 30, to start replacing the bridges over U.S. 71 and the East Nishnabotna River, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (Iowa DOT) Creston construction office. The bridges are located between mileposts 60 and 61 at the U.S. 71 interchange with Interstate 80.

While the westbound lanes are closed, two-lane traffic will be routed head-to-head in the eastbound lanes. The bridges are scheduled to be completed and interstate reopened to normal traffic by late fall.

In addition, the northbound lanes of U.S. 71 will be closed Monday, June 30, while a portion of the existing Interstate 80 bridge is removed. Two-lane traffic will be directed to the southbound lanes. Traffic will return to normal patterns before Friday, July 4.

The Iowa DOT asks motorists to drive with caution and obey posted signs in the construction area. As in all construction zones, drivers should stay alert, watch their speed, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear their seat belts.
