Location design hearing for Iowa 92 to be held Aug. 19

AMES, Iowa – July 30, 2008 – An open forum location design public hearing will be held Aug. 19 to discuss the proposed reconstruction of Iowa 92 from Interstate 35 east to S. Kenwood Boulevard in Indianola. The purpose of this hearing is to discuss the environmental assessment (EA) completed for this project, the two alternatives carried forward and their anticipated impacts.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will hold the hearing at the Indianola Community Center, 2204 W. Second Ave. The public is invited to attend anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. This public hearing will be conducted utilizing an open forum format. No formal presentation will be made. Oral and written statements will be accepted at the public hearing.

The proposed improvement would be developed in two sections. From I-35 to Warren County Road R-63 the roadway would be reconstructed as a two-lane facility with full-width shoulders and turning lanes at major intersections. Access for this section would be allowed at a minimum 600-foot spacing, which would result in a reduction in the number of access points along the roadway. At Warren County Road R-63 the roadway would transition to a three-lane facility with a continuous center left-turn lane and proceed east to tie-into the existing roadway. Access for this section would be allowed at a minimum 1,000-foot spacing. In the future, as traffic volumes warrant, this section may be upgraded to a five-lane roadway with a center left-turn lane.

The Iowa DOT and Warren County in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has prepared an EA for this project. Copies may be obtained at the Iowa DOT, Warren County Engineer’s office or the FHWA office in Ames. A copy of the EA will be available for inspection at the hearing and is also available for viewing at the Indianola Public Library, 207 N. B St.

A review deadline of Sep. 8, 2008, has been established for receipt of comments about this document. All comments received about the EA by that date will be considered by the Iowa DOT and FHWA in their evaluation of the environmental impacts of the project. Comments  regarding the EA should be submitted to the Director, Office of Location and Environment, Iowa DOT, 800 Lincoln Way, Ames, IA 50010.

Written statements and related exhibits, in place of or in addition to oral statements made at the public hearing, will be accepted at the hearing or may be submitted to the Office of Location and Environment. All written material received by Sept. 8, 2008, will be included in the hearing transcript.
