Iowa Transportation Commission approves $159 million in additional highway projects
AMES, Iowa – Oct. 14, 2008 – Today, the Iowa Transportation Commission amended the FY2009-2013 Iowa Transportation Improvement Program by adding seven highway projects valued at $159 million to the program. These investments in Iowa’s transportation system are made possible by revenues that will be coming from the TIME-21 Fund.
The Transportation Investment Moves the Economy in the 21st Century or TIME-21 Fund was established by the legislature in 2007. Revenue sources that flow into the fund were specified in Senate File 2420, signed by Governor Chet Culver April 22, 2008. TIME-21 revenues begin flowing to the state, cities and counties after Jan. 1, 2009, and gradually increase over the coming years.
Commission Chair Patricia Jones Crawford said, “In 2006, the Iowa Department of Transportation projected a $27.7 billion shortfall in funding for Iowa's public roads system over the next 20 years. The TIME-21 funding approved by the legislature earlier this year and signed into law by Governor Culver is already helping narrow this gap by allowing us to fund some of the highway projects the commission has identified as key to supporting and enhancing Iowa's economy, particularly the bio-energy sector.”
