I-29 and I-680 ramp restrictions for bridge painting work to begin next week

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – June 26, 2009 – Bridge painting will result in ramp closures from Interstate 29 to eastbound Interstate 680 the week of June 28, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation's (DOT) Council Bluffs construction office.

The work involves painting the railroad bridge over I-680 at milepost 13, just east of I-29. Due to the proximity of the ramps to the overhead bridge, the ramp from northbound I-29 to eastbound I-680 and the ramp from southbound I-29 to eastbound I-680 will be closed for two to three days each to complete the painting, weather permitting. Only one ramp will be closed at any given time.

Starting Sunday, June 28, the southbound I-29 to eastbound I-680 ramp will be closed and traffic will be routed south nine miles on I-29 to the Crescent interchange (exit 61), then back north on I-29 to utilize the northbound I-29 to eastbound I-680 ramp.

Starting Tuesday, June 30, the closure will be switched to the northbound I-29 to eastbound I-680 ramp. Traffic will be routed less than a mile north on I-29 to the Loveland exit, then back south on I-29 to utilize the southbound I-29 to eastbound I-680 ramp.

The contractor for the project, Euro Paint, LLC of Lowellville, Ohio, is expected to finish the $406,000 project early in July.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations can more than double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
