Gusty winds continue to cause travel problems in Iowa

AMES, Iowa – Feb. 15, 2010 – 7:30 p.m. – The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is reporting that all roads, except those in far east central Iowa, are now covered or partially covered with snow and ice. Slick road conditions exist and drifting snow is reducing many roadways to one lane of travel. Road conditions are not expected to improve this evening due to the gusty winds, which will continue across the state through the overnight hours.

On Tuesday, the chance of flurries will exit the south in the morning. However, the gusty winds will continue, dissipating in the west late in the day. Some breezy conditions will still be found in the east into Wednesday.

Interstate 29 closure

Southbound I-29 from the Singing Hills Boulevard interchange in Sioux City (exit 143) to the Onawa interchange (exit 112) will remain closed overnight. Strong winds and light snow forecast for this evening will continue to cause significant drifting and visibility issues in the area.

Travelers are warned that use of unofficial detours on county roads in Woodbury and Monona counties may lead you into trouble because these counties do not operate road crews during the evening or overnight hours. The roads could become impassable.

The northbound lanes of I-29 presently remain open. However, visibility is limited in some areas and the roadway is covered with a mix of snow and ice. Caution is advised.

Regular updates
Lane restrictions and closing of roadways is a dynamic situation as crews throughout the state work to remove blockages. Therefore, the Iowa DOT will be issuing periodic updates throughout today, as warranted. The information provided in this advisory is accurate at the time of issuance; however, the reopening of roads or discovery of new blockages may occur before the next advisory is issued.
