U.S. 61 traffic changes in Lee County at Harper Lane

Posted on: August 31, 2010

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa – Aug. 31, 2010 – The second of two bridge construction projects on U.S. 61 related to the Fort Madison bypass will cause changes to travel patterns beginning Wednesday, Sept. 1, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Mount Pleasant construction office.

Traffic is being placed in a head-to-head pattern in the northbound lanes of U.S. 61 to allow the contractor to construct the new southbound U.S. 61 bridge over Harper Lane. The second bridge is expected to be completed and traffic returned to normal by the end of the 2010 construction season.

During the shift in traffic patterns, the open lanes will have a 12-foot width lane restriction in place.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations can more than double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
