Drivers warned to be on the lookout for icy roads
AMES, Iowa – Jan. 12, 2011, 9 a.m. update – As the strong winds taper off from west to east, motorists should be aware that there have been reports of black ice and wheel-track glazing where the snow is blowing across the roadway at the surface level, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).
East-west roads in open and rural areas are especially vulnerable, as flurries continue and snow that has fallen over the last few days blows across the roads. Several accidents and jackknifed vehicles have been reported this morning along Interstate 80 in central and eastern Iowa, as well as I-235. Roadway surfaces appear dry, but they are glazed or spots of black ice are present.
The Iowa DOT also reminds travelers not to leave the house without a winter survival kit and a cell phone. Frigid temperatures will be felt across the state today, so if you must travel, be prepared for dangerous wind chills. If outdoors and sufficient precautions are not taken, the bitterly cold temperatures can result in frostbite or lead to hypothermia. If you become stranded, do not leave your vehicle. Call 911 and utilize the materials in your winter survival kit, as well as additional blankets and warm clothing, until help arrives.
