Iowa DOT issues travel advisory

AMES, Iowa – Jan. 10, 2011 – 6:30 a.m. update – The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is reporting that the roads in the western half of the state are currently partially or completely covered with snow. This includes Interstates 29, 35, 80 and 680.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for all but the northeast corner of the state. This advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Travelers should expect slick road conditions as light to moderate snow continues to fall throughout the day. Motorists are urged to adjust their travel speeds and turn off the cruise control. Put plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicles ahead, especially slow-moving snow plows.

This prolonged winter event is expected to bring significant snow accumulations to parts of the state. Dry air will keep the snow from approaching the far eastern edge of the state until this afternoon and evening. Total snow accumulations could be as much as to 6 to 11 inches in the western third of the state; up to 7 inches in the central third; and 2 to 5 inches in the eastern third.

The winds, gusting in the mid to upper 20s, will cause some blowing snow, drifting and possibly reduced visibilities during periods today and Tuesday.

For the latest road conditions, visit www.511ia.org or call 511 (in Iowa)/800-288-1047 (outside the state.
