Iowa Transportation Commission approves Safe Routes to School program funding
AMES, Iowa – Jan. 11, 2011 – Today, the Iowa Transportation Commission approved more than $1.75 million in total funding for 19 Safe Routes to School projects. The Safe Routes to School program was created with federal transportation funds in 2005 with the purpose of increasing the number of children safely walking and bicycling to school. This funding is available to cities, counties, state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and public and private schools through an annual application-based program.
The projects and approved funding amounts are listed below.
Noninfrastructure
- Cerro Gordo County Walking School Bus Program (Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health) - $37,432
- Mediapolis Safe Routes to School Plan (Mediapolis) - $15,000
- Safe Routes to School in Rural Northeast Iowa (Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative) - $95,000
- Whittier Walking School Bus (Whittier School-Clinton) - $4,500
- Noninfrastructure costs for recommended infrastructure projects - $28,700

- 29th Street SW Sidewalk from Wilson Avenue to Van Buren Drive (Cedar Rapids) (plus $1,000 for noninfrastructure activities) - $71,719
- Barrick Road Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge (Janesville) - $250,000
- Black Hawk Elementary School Sidewalk Extension (Burlington) - $87,295
- Central Intermediate/Middle School Infrastructure Improvements (DeWitt) - $100,000
- Creating Connections: Establishing Safe Routes to Schools in West Branch (West Branch) - $250,000
- Dubuque School Safety Improvements (Dubuque) - $70,750
- Grand Boulevard Sidewalk Improvements (Evansdale) - $84,220
