I-29 Onawa area rest areas will open for holiday weekend

AMES, Iowa – June 29, 2011 – The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is reporting that the Interstate 29 Onawa area north- and southbound rest areas will be reopened by Friday morning and remain open for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The rest areas have been closed temporarily while used for staging emergency supplies, aggregate and equipment necessary for construction of the highway flood barrier walls.

After the holiday weekend, the northbound rest area will remain open. The southbound rest area may be closed again temporarily to finish any remaining work on the barrier walls.

The Iowa DOT appreciates the public’s continued patience during these interruptions in service, as emergency work is performed to try to keep the interstate open for travel.
