Bridge removal at I-29 and Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77 interchange in Sioux City begins tonight


SIOUX CITY, Iowa – March 16, 2012 – Motorists traveling on Interstate 29 in the Sioux City area will be routed through a detour at the I-29 and Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77 interchange (exit 148) due to a bridge removal project beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Sioux City construction office. See map for more information about the detour routes for this project.

Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77 will be closed at I-29 while work is underway to remove the third level bridge on Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77 that spans I-29. Motorists traveling either direction on I-29 will be routed on the exit ramp at Wesley Parkway, and then re-enter I-29 from the Wesley Parkway entrance ramp. (See the green route on the detour map.)

Access from downtown Sioux City to I-29 will not be available at Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77. Motorists wanting to travel southbound on I-29 from Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77 will need to take Fifth Street east to Pierce Street, and then south on Pierce Street to southbound I-29. (See the blue route on the detour map.) Access from South Sioux City, Neb., to southbound I-29 will be maintained.

Motorists traveling northbound on Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77 from South Sioux City with the intent to travel northbound on I-29 will need to proceed southbound on I-29 and exit at Nebraska Street (exit 147B), then continue north on Nebraska Street until Sixth Street, then proceed west on Sixth Street to West Fourth Street and continue on West Fourth Street to Hamilton Boulevard, and then south on Hamilton Boulevard to enter northbound I-29 at the interchange. Motorists traveling northbound on I-29 with the intent to travel to South Sioux City will need to exit at ramp 147B to Gordon Drive, then west on  Gordon Drive to Pearl Street, then north on Pearl Street to Sixth Street, then west on Sixth Street to West Fourth, then continue on West Fourth Street to Hamilton Boulevard, then south on Hamilton Boulevard to a connector road between Hamilton Boulevard and Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77, then on the connector road to Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77, and then south on Wesley Parkway/U.S. 77  to South Sioux City. Cramer and Associates is the contractor for the reconstruction of the Wesley Parkway interchange that is a part of the I-29 reconstruction project in Sioux City. The I-29 closure is expected to be completed by 6 a.m. Monday, March 19.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed li­­­mit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
