Expect Patchy Slick Areas Throughout the Afternoon #iatraffic

AMES, Iowa – Feb. 27, 2013; 11 a.m. update – Warmer pavement temperatures and diminishing snowfall has helped most interstate routes return to normal winter driving conditions, which consists of wet roads with spotty areas of partial snow coverage. Iowa Department of Transportation road crews are still working to clean up remaining routes impacted by the winter storm. Salt is also being applied to trouble spots throughout the entire system.

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s WeatherView system is presently reporting a north-northwest wind of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. The wind is causing snow to blow across the surface of the roadways, creating patchy slick spots. East-west roadways in open, rural areas are particularly vulnerable to this glazing effect.

The National Weather Service is forecasting continued light snow for areas east of Interstate 35 through late afternoon. So drivers in this area should continue to exercise caution.

 Safety tips for the day:

  • Do not use your cruise control.
  • Make sure you and all passengers are using seatbelts or safety seats.
  • Add some additional space between your vehicle and those ahead.
