Posted on: May 30, 2013

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – May 30, 2013 – Road construction work at the intersection of Iowa 1 and U.S. 30 in Mount Vernon will require closing the south leg of the intersection to traffic beginning Monday, June 3, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Mount Vernon City Engineer Dan Boggs reports that Iowa 1 traffic will be detoured around the construction zone from June 3 until approximately Oct. 15. (The detour adds approximately 0.2 mile to the normal travel distance on Iowa 1.)

  • Northbound: Motorists at the intersection of Iowa 1 and Rachel Street will travel southeast on Rachel Street to Virgil Drive, northeast to U.S. 30, and then west to Iowa 1.

  • Southbound: Motorists at the intersection of Iowa 1 and U.S. 30 will travel east on U.S. 30 to Virgil Drive, southwest on Virgil Drive to Rachel Street, and then northwest on Rachel Street to Iowa 1.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations can more than double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
