DES MOINES, Iowa – April 4, 2014 – Work continues on the capacity improvement project on Interstate 35 in West Des Moines. The next phase of the project requires closing the access to and from Grand Avenue from northbound I-35 beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 10, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Des Moines construction office. Motorists should follow the marked detour routes during this closure.
Then on Sunday, April 13 northbound I-35 traffic will be shifted into the center median section similar to last year only in the opposite direction. There should be minimal impacts to southbound I-35 traffic operations. Access to Mills Civic Parkway will be maintained; single lane closures may occur during off-peak hours. Motorists on northbound I-35 will not have access to or from Grand Avenue until late fall with a final project completion date of November 25, 2014.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
