Media alert: U.S. 20 – On the Road to the Final 40 events scheduled for Nov. 17 in Fort Dodge and Sioux City

Posted on: November 16, 2015

AMES, Iowa - Nov. 16, 2015 – Members of the media are invited to attend one or both separate celebrations of the road expansion of the final 40 miles of U.S. 20. The Iowa Department of Transportation, Governor Terry Branstad, and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds will be hosting both events Tuesday, Nov. 17, at:

            Fort Dodge, 9:30 to 11 a.m.
            Webster County Fairgrounds

            Auditorium East Wing
            22770 Old Highway 169

            Sioux City, 2 to 3:30 p.m.
            Sioux City Convention Center

            Meeting rooms 1 and 2
            801 Fourth St.

Construction of the two additional lanes of U.S. 20 between Early and Moville began in 2014. The final 40 miles of expansion to four lanes is scheduled for completion in fall 2018.

“The U.S. 20 project will enhance Iowa’s economic vitality, reduce traffic on congested east/west routes and provide improved mobility options for those travelling across the state,” said Governor Branstad. “In addition, the four-lane expansion of the final 40 miles of U.S. 20 will provide increased economic development opportunities for northwest Iowa.”

Lt. Gov. Reynolds said, “Supporters have long realized expanding U.S. 20 from two lanes to four would improve movement of freight across the state, increase mobility for citizens, and spur economic development for the region.”

The expansion provides another transportation choice for travelers, particularly those moving through the north central part of Iowa. This choice helps alleviate freight congestion on other busy east/west routes like Interstate 80 through Iowa and I-90 across southern Minnesota, lowering overall costs for freight movers and travelers alike.
