Travelers on 54th Avenue on two sides of the Des Moines metro to encounter road work

AMES, Iowa – March 31, 2016 –  Two roadway construction projects, both on 54th Avenue in the Des Moines metro area, are set begin April 4, according the Iowa Department of Transportation’s District 1 Office.

The first project, being conducted by the Iowa DOT, is the reconstruction of the NE 54th Avenue bridge over Interstate 35 near Ankeny. The project will require the closure of NE 54th Avenue from April 4 to the end of November. Details of this project can be found at

The second project on NW 54th Avenue in Urbandale is being conducted by the City of Urbandale. This project is also set to begin April 4. Details of that project can be found at A map of the area is available at

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
