U.S. 71 in Clay County to reopen Aug. 31 for Labor Day weekend #iatraffic

CHEROKEE, Iowa – Aug. 29, 2016 – U.S. 71 in Clay County will reopen to traffic at noon Wednesday, Aug. 31, and remain open through the Labor Day weekend. At 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, the U.S. 71 road closure and detour between the Buena Vista County line and Clay County Road B-63 will be reinstated to complete the Portland concrete cement overlay project, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Cherokee construction office.

Motorists will be detoured around the closure using Iowa 10, Clay County roads M-54 and B-63. The detour is anticipated to be in place until the end of September.

Cedar Valley Corp., of Waterloo, was awarded this $4.3 million pavement project.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
