On-ramp to northbound I-380 from Wilson Avenue to close Friday night, March 30 #iatraffic

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – March 27, 2018 – A bridge deck overlay project on the southbound Interstate 380 bridge over 15th and 16th avenues in Cedar Rapids will impact traffic flow on I-380. The bridge work will require closing the on-ramp to southbound I-380 from Diagonal Drive/L Street and the on-ramp to northbound I-380 from Wilson Avenue at different dates with the on-ramp closure from Wilson Avenue to northbound I-380 and shifting of the northbound I-380 lanes beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, March 30, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Cedar Rapids construction office.

Traffic impact – northbound I-380
Overnight on Friday, March 30: All northbound I-380 traffic in the project area will be shifted to the right to create an additional lane for the southbound direction. This will be in place by the morning of Saturday, March 31.

Due to the limited distance for the traffic from Wilson Avenue to get on northbound I-380, the on-ramp to northbound I-380 will be closed. During this closure, traffic will be detoured to southbound I-380 and 33rd Avenue to reach northbound I-380. This ramp will be closed and remain closed until the project is completed, which is expected to be early September.

Traffic impact – southbound I-380

On Monday, April 9, one-half of the bridge on southbound I-380 over 15th and 16th avenues will be closed for the overlay. However, two lanes on the bridge next to the work area will remain open with barrier rail in place to separate traffic from the work area.

The on-ramp for traffic from Diagonal Drive/L Street to I-380 southbound will be closed. During this closure, traffic will be detoured to Fifth Avenue Southwest to Sixth Street Southwest, and 33rd Avenue to reach southbound I-380. This will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. on April 9 while line work is being done on the southbound lanes.

Depending on the weather, over the weekend, the inside lane traffic of southbound I-380 will be shifted to the newly created lane on northbound I-380 with a crossover, then shifted back onto southbound I-380 at another crossover after the bridge. Barrier rail will be in place to separate the traffic between the north- and southbound lanes.

Truck traffic will be required to go straight on the southbound right lanes and will not be allowed on the crossovers.

This project is expected to be completed by early September 2018.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
