NEW HAMPTON, Iowa – Nov. 14, 2018 – As part of the Iowa 58 and Viking Road interchange project in Cedar Falls, traffic shifts will occur on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 18, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.
North- and southbound Iowa 58 traffic will be separated with northbound traffic travelling on the newly constructed northbound exit and entrance ramps, and southbound traffic will continue to travel on the existing southbound lanes. Viking Road will open in it’s entirety. To accomplish the traffic shifts, the intersection of Iowa 58 and Viking Road will be closed overnight for pavement marking and traffic signal work from 9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18, to 6 a.m., Monday, Nov. 19. Iowa 58 will be closed between Ridgeway Avenue and Greenhill Road. Viking Road will be closed between Nordic Drive and Andrea Drive.
Electronic message boards will be in place to provide motorists advanced notice of the closure.
During the closure, the signed detour route will be on Ridgeway Avenue, Hudson Road, and Greenhill Road. For access to businesses east of Iowa 58, motorists may use Prairie Parkway or Cedar Heights Drive via Greenhill Road.
Some lane closures will occur on Monday, Nov. 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 20, as work continues. All lanes will be open to traffic through the Thanksgiving weekend. Beginning Monday, Nov. 26, there will be lane closures as needed for work on this two-year project.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
