Public input requested for two proposed bridge improvements to Iowa 2 in Lee County

Posted on: December 17, 2019

AMES, Iowa – December 17, 2019 – The Iowa Department of Transportation is requesting public input on the proposed removal and replacement of the Iowa 2 bridge over Sugar Creek (1.8 miles west of U.S. 218), the Iowa 2 bridge over Lick Creek (4.3 miles east of Junction Iowa 81), and the proposed off-site detour for the two projects.

SUGAR CREEK PROJECT: The proposed project involves removing the existing 150-foot long x 28-foot wide steel I-beam/concrete beam bridge and replacing it with a 204-foot long x 40-foot wide pretensioned prestressed concrete beam bridge. The project will also involve raising the grade approximately 1.5 feet, erosion control mitigation, installing new guardrail, and paved shoulders.

LICK CREEK PROJECT: The proposed project involves removing the existing 63-foot long x 30-foot wide steel girder and floor beam bridge and replacing it with a 130-foot long x 40-foot wide single span Bulb Tee D beam bridge. The project will also involve raising the grade approximately 8 inches, erosion control mitigation, installing new guardrail, and paved shoulders.

PROPOSED OFF-SITE DETOUR:  Construction would occur calendar year 2021 and both projects will be coordinated so Iowa 2 is only closed in one location at a time. Through traffic on Iowa 2 would be detoured during construction using U.S. 218, Lee County Road J-40/160th Street, and Lee County Road W-46/100th Avenue. It is anticipated the detour will be in place for the majority of the construction season.  Local traffic will have access to Iowa 2, except for where the bridges crossing over Sugar Creek (near mile marker 246.97) and Lick Creek (near mile marker 241.72) are closed.
