Inside lane closure on northbound U.S. 218 in Waterloo begins Monday, March 16

NEW HAMPTON, Iowa – March 13, 2020 – A project to reconstruct the northbound lanes of U.S. 218 from Airport Boulevard to the Iowa 27 interchange in Waterloo will begin on Monday, March 16, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.

The initial operation will require closing the inside lane to complete some preparation work. Once completed, the inside lane closure will be removed, and an outside lane closure will be in place to allow the contractor to set up a temporary barrier in preparation for the first stage of the project.

The first stage of the reconstruction project, which begins on Monday, March 23, weather permitting, will be within the outside lane and shoulder for pavement removal and grading work on U.S. 218 for the new pavement. The closures are expected to be in place until late May, when the next stage of construction will begin. Traffic sensors will detect traffic flow, and portable signs in advance of the work zone will let motorists know when traffic is moving slowly. Motorists may be asked to take alternate routes around the work zone.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
