Iowa DOT News Release

Update: Traffic lane shift on I-35 at the East First Street interchange in Ankeny now scheduled for Thursday, April 23

Posted on: April 16, 2020

GRIMES, Iowa – April 16, 2020 – A project to rebuild the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 between NE 36th Street and East First Street requires shifting the southbound I-35 traffic across the median and into a head-to-head traffic pattern from south of the NE 36th Street interchange to south of the East First Street interchange in Ankeny starting Thursday, April 23, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes construction office.

The southbound I-35 exit ramp to East First Street (exit 92) will be closed until November.

Construction crews will also be using lane closures and shifting traffic at the intersection of East First Street and Delaware Avenue beginning the week of April 20 and continuing for approximately four weeks. Pavement widening on East First Street, west of Delaware Avenue, will occur during this period. The sidewalks and the driveways to businesses immediately west of the intersection will be temporarily closed and repaved during the four-week period. Temporary access to the adjacent businesses will be maintained during this construction.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
