Iowa 1 south of Iowa City to reopen Sept. 25
FAIRFIELD, Iowa – Sept. 23, 2020 – Replacement of two bridges and construction of two new box culverts on Iowa 1, just south of Johnson County Road F-52, south of Iowa City, will be completed and the roadway reopened to traffic Friday, Sept. 25, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Fairfield construction office.
There may be intermittent lane and shoulder closures over the next few weeks where flaggers will assist traffic through the work area to allow the contractor to finish the detail work for this project.
This project included the replacement of the existing steel girder bridge over Old Woman’s Creek with a concrete beam bridge, and replacement of the existing steel bridge over Old Man’s Creek with a rolled-steel bridge. In addition, two new reinforced concrete box culverts were constructed at Old Man's Creek Overflow.
The prime contractor on this project is Kraemer North America, LLC. To allow for quicker bridge construction, the contactor used accelerated bridge construction methods and worked under an aggressive schedule to complete their work.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
