Iowa DOT and Des Moines Public Library collaborate to ensure citizens have proper identification
DES MOINES, Iowa – April 9, 2024 - The Iowa Department of Transportation and Des Moines Public Library have teamed up to provide personalized support and guidance to individuals seeking an identification card.
On May 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the DOT will have specialists on-site at the Des Moines Public Library branch at 1000 Grand Avenue to provide hands-on assistance and issue IDs to individuals who are pre-registered.
To take advantage of this opportunity, you’ll need to schedule an appointment between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Appointments can be made by contacting Ashlan Lippert, the Des Moines Public Library’s Community Resource Specialist, at [email protected] or telephone at 515-201-9823.
Having valid identification opens up many doors including the ability to find a stable job and a place to live. These sessions are geared to assist individuals who may need extra guidance with their application for an identification card, including unsheltered Iowans.
The library has worked to increase access to basic needs for citizens including securing housing, accessing social security and disability benefits, enrolling in medical insurance, obtaining food assistance, phones, and facilitating job connections. Lippert, who is the library’s first on-staff social worker, recognized the critical role identification plays in accessing vital services and spearheaded the partnership with the Iowa DOT. The two organizations hope to offer this assistance regularly in the future.
"We are thrilled to embark on this partnership with the Des Moines Public Library," said Darcy Doty, Customer Service Bureau Director at the Iowa DOT. "By working together, we aim to empower individuals in our community with the necessary tools and resources to achieve greater stability and success in their lives."
For more information or to schedule an appointment during these scheduled events, individuals are encouraged to contact Ashlan Lippert at the Des Moines Public Library at [email protected] or 515-201-9823.
