U.S. 18 bridge over Stoney Creek near Everly will be open tonight
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Nov. 26, 2024 – Crews are finishing up pavement marking and guardrail work on the new U.S. 18 bridge over Stoney Creek near Everly in Clay County so you will be able to travel over the bridge after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26. This bridge was washed out in June 2024 due to historic flooding.
The old bridge was demolished and removed, and the site was prepared for construction of a new bridge in late August. This took about three weeks to complete. A special letting was held on Sept. 24 for construction of a new bridge on U.S. 18 over Stoney Creek. The target completion date for the new bridge was Dec. 20, 2024, but construction crews have finished the bridge about a month ahead of schedule. Motorists will no longer have to follow a detour around the closed bridge.
Work at the bridge site in spring of 2025 will include final grading, seeding grass, and stabilizing the area around the riverbank and bridge.
Mobility from the historic flooding has been fully restored in northwest Iowa with the completion of this project.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
