The Iowa DOT is requesting public input on the proposed bridge replacement on Iowa 22 over Bulgers Run, 4.8 miles east of Iowa 1, in Washington County, the project’s proposed off-site detour route, and right-of-way needs of the project.
The proposed project involves the replacement of the existing 52-foot x 30-foot I-beam bridge, over Bulgers Run, with a 12-foot x 12-foot twin reinforced concrete box (RCB) culvert. Construction would occur calendar year 2021 and will be on an expedited schedule
During the bridge replacement the roadway will be closed. Motorists will be directed to use an official off-site detour. The detour will follow Iowa 27/U.S. 218 (North and South for about 10 miles), and Iowa 1 (North and South for about 15 miles). It is anticipated the detour will be in place for 14 days. Local traffic along Iowa 22 will have access to Iowa 22 except for the lanes crossing the bridge over Bulgers Run.
A cumulative total of 0.62 acres of right-of-way will be acquired from two individually owned parcels to permit grading for the bridge replacement and to install a splash basin for stream mitigation.
